Menu Plan Monday :: February 6, 2012

Last weekend I spent about an hour planning my menu for the month of February. I worked on my plan at the library and had at least one extra activity each week to plan for. Those 2 things slowed me down.

But it's done and I'm glad I don't have to think about "What's for supper?" again until March!

This week we have 2 exciting field trips on our calendar: a Cub Scout tour of the Rhode Island State House and watching Mary Poppins at Providence Performing Arts Center.

So, what are we eating February 6-12, 2012?

  • Kielbasa and Lentil Soup, Cheddar Bread
  • Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup (from my freezer)
  • Pot Roast, Carrots, Potatoes, Homemade Biscuits and Gravy
  • Shredded Beef Tacos, Fruit Salad
  • Pepperoni Pizza, Salad, Pineapple Chunks
  • Turkey Spaghetti, Salad, Fruit
  • Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Scrambled Eggs

Do you menu plan for a month, two weeks or just one week? How long does your planning process take?

Looks like a fun week! Micah would love to tour the state house (something I wish we had done before we moved--but we're still close enough to do it someday...) and Mary Poppins sounds amazing!

My monthly planning takes about an hour (depending on interruptions!). Seems like there are special things each month to consider: holidays, company, schedules, etc. It's worth the extra few minutes to think through everything so I don't have more work later!

I LOVE that I don't have to think about meals until March, either!

It's definitely worth the time to think things through. I'm flexible about my meals so as new things are added to my calendar I can adjust our meals. Things like Joel going out for supper with co-workers to say good-bye to one of the team members. I might switch meals for that night since he won't be here to enjoy it.

I plan and shop every two weeks. My menu plan consists of 14 meals (because I like to have stuff on hand in case of a blizzard like we had last week on grocery shopping day!)

It takes me about 15 minutes to plan menus and about 20 minutes to make a grocery list. It takes about 3 hours to shop (because I go to 3 stores + Costco) but doing every other week makes it bearable for me.

I tend to break my planning into separate days. I make my menu plan one day and my shopping list the day before I shop. I keep running lists of things I know I need from each store so that the grocery list goes VERY quickly.

Great tips, Mer! Rhode Islanders are notorious for emptying grocery stores of bread and milk when the weather forecast calls for a major snow storm. I've been guilty of joining the crowd on that one. I'm guessing you don't grocery shop in all of those stores with your kids in tow. ;)
