If you take a boy strawberry picking...

If you take a 3 year old boy strawberry picking,
he's gonna want his own quart container.

Once he gets in the strawberry patch with his container,
he'll start picking strawberries.

As he picks the strawberries,
he'll probably eat quite a few.

After he starts eating the strawberries,
his mama will remind him not to eat the stems.

After mama reminds him about the stems,
he might declare the strawberries,
stems and all, taste YUMMY!

And chances are good, when the brothers and sister
have filled their containers,
the 3 year old boy's will still be empty.

Do you go strawberry picking with your kids?

Our local strawberry farm has a huge scale and a sign that says, 'please weigh children before and after strawberry picking'. They aren't serious but it's pretty funny.

How fun!!! The mess is part of strawberry picking! I haven't gone in ages, but I remember the last time I did (as a kid,) I think I ate more than I saved!

Rachel- that sign is genius! LOL!

Rachel, that sign is too funny! At one point Sam had about half a quart picked, and then ate them all. So when we paid, I had the girl double Ellie's container and paid for what Sam ate. The farm didn't require it but we love apple picking there and it's a family owned farm so I felt good about paying what we ate. :)

Emily, strawberry picking is always messy. I learned years ago to put my kids in red shirts and to wear a red shirt myself. Then juice stains don't show up. :D

Stephanie, you reminded me an incident when my son was about 18 months old. By this time, he was old enough to have been taken all around the grandparents farm. We were all outside when someone asked "Where's the baby?" And you know that heart pounding panic as everyone races to where an 18 month old might have toddled off. My father hooted his laughter which brought us all running in relief.

My father had a vineyard of concord grapes. We found my son, seated under the heavy vines. He was purple from his shoes right up to the ends of his white blonde hair. We asked him what he thought he was doing and he smiled the biggest purple smile, teeth and all. He held out his purple hand told us "See?" He was harvesting grapes his own way. :) Sweet memory of both he AND my father.

red shirts! Great idea- why didn't I think of that!!!

(knowing me I'd just take their shirts off, haha!)

Deb, it's too late for strawberries. We usually go around the middle of June. Normally we go to Dame Farm but they didn't have berries this year so we ended up at Jaswell's Farm. We always go apple picking at Jaswell's on Columbus Day.

Emily, we've been going strawberry picking since my oldest was 2 yrs old - so this was our 7th year. I've learned a lot over the years - like shirts. The red shirts also make really cute pictures against the green background of the berry plants. :)

Oh! That is just too cute. We don't have any pick your own strawberry patches around us, but I did take my own kids to a pick-your-own raspberry patch once. I, too, had to keep reminding them not to eat them just yet. Thanks for sharing this, and putting a smile on my face.

This is such a cute post! I love that he ate the strawberries and their stems. I hope he didn't get a bellyache from eating them all!

That is great! I love "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," but I think "If You Give Your 3-Year-Old a Strawberry Patch" is much better!

So fun! Strawberry picking is the best! And I love that you used the "If you give a mouse a cookie" book as inspiration for this. Such a cute idea!

Thanks, Ladies. We love If you give a mouse a cookie (and the sequel books)!

Carrie, the berries were tiny. We're talking marble-sized so he avoided a belly ache. Which is good because we followed the berries with ice cream cones. :D
