The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Little, Brown Books, 2008.
Carrie at Reading to Know has gone on, and on, and on about the awesomeness of The Mysterious Benedict Society.
So when I found a copy for less than $2 at a home school used curriculum/book sale I laughed out loud and clapped my hands. I knew that I had to take that book home and see what all the fuss was about.
Well, as usual, Carrie was spot on in her review!
The story is about 4 very unique children who use their talents to solve a mystery and save the world. And that's all I'm going to tell you for fear that I'll give away too much.
I'll just say it's a great story. Very entertaining. Clean with nothing to make me cringe. And I read it in a day and a half. I rarely read a book that quickly these days due to the 4 little people that live in my home and demand most of my attention.
So, you should read it. As soon as possible. I have not read this book with my kids or handed it over to them. I think the suspense and tension of the mystery would be a little to much for them right now. But I think a 10-12 year old would have no problems with this story.
Thanks, Carrie, for recommending another great book!

My kids LOVE that book! I need to read it too, I guess.
I think you'd enjoy the story. It's a pretty quick read.
I was just looking into this series for my son - and found that I kinda want to read it myself. That happens often enough to me. :)
You should read it! It really is a fun story with a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I know my son will enjoy it when he's a little older.
Thank you. Thank you very much. ;)
Did you know that the author lives in Little Rock, AR? My kids told me that and I looked it up on the web to verify. I don't know if he's a native Arkansan or not, but I love that little tidbit!
I saw on the website for the book (if you follow one of the book links it goes to a site to play games and stuff for the books) that you can write the author and send it to Little Rock. That was all the info I could find. It's fun to think of fellow Arkansans being great authors. :)
I've heard a lot about this book, guess I should pick it up. Right now my kids are furiously reading the Percy Jackson series, so I don't think I'll be able to pull them away from that any time soon. But it would be great to have something for them when they finish Percy Jackson...
Barb's latest book review: The Housekeeper and the Professor.
I haven't read the Percy Jackson series but from the reviews I've read I think The Mysterious Benedict Society series would appeal to the same readers. It really is a fun book!
I agree with your review completely!
Great price too.
I bought mine in paperback for 4.99 at TJ Maxx, I believe, which I was pretty happy about.
