Kid Quotes :: Glittering

"Mama!  I just saw a plastic bag fly into our yard and then fly into our neighbor's yard!!  That's bad!  That's glittering!!"  - Ellie, 4.5 years.

Hmm.. I don't remember reading anything about 'glittering' in that book about the environment we read aloud a few weeks ago.

This little piggy was snoring?!

The following conversation took place at breakfast on Saturday before Samuel was born.

Will: I came into your room this morning while you were still asleep.
Joel: What did we look like?
Will: (Sort of closes his eyes.)
Me: What did Daddy sound like?
Will: A pig.

I've been telling Joel he snores badly! Now someone else agrees with me.

Benjamin, The Funny Man

William is my extrovert life-of-the-party guy. Benjamin is my introvert man-of-few-words. I commented to Joel the other day that Ben is really the funny man. Will tries to be but his sense of comic timing is a little off. Ben's is right on target. For example...

After reading for our nightly family devotions the passage in Acts that talks about the disciples fellowshipping in each others homes daily, the following conversation occurred.

Joel: Ben, where were the disciples meeting?
Ben: I don't know.
Me: We're they meeting at McDonald's?
Ben: Laughing. "Noooooo...."
Me: If they weren't meeting at McDonald's, where were they meeting?
Ben: At Burger King. Grin from ear to ear.

He absolutely understood he was making a joke. What a rascal!

"I can see his brains!" - William, age 5.

The short version: Tuesday Ben was standing on top of a pick-up truck riding toy we keep in the backyard. Will shook the truck. Ben fell off and hit the back of his head on the propped open screen door. Daddy came home about 10 minutes later (he was already on his way home when the event occurred) to find me cleaning blood from Ben and lecturing Will.

Daddy called the pediatrician who sent Joel & Ben to the Urgent Care Center. The doctor there said it was an "impressive" cut but not all the way to the bone. It was about half an inch long and he closed the gash with 6 staples.

Joel & Ben returned to Urgent Care Sunday evening to have the staples removed. Joel said he could have saved himself two hours and done the job with a pair of needle-nosed pliers at home.

I don't think so!

Sorry for the blurriness. Click on the picture to see the gash better.
6 staples and nearly 3 hours later, they ate supper at McDonald's.
Joel "enjoyed" a burger while Ben feasted on ice cream.
Again, sorry for the blurriness. Click to see the staples.

Quote of the Day - Languages

"Uncle Stephen speaks another language." - Will, age 5.

You should know Uncle Stephen is my brother. He lives in Arkansas, raises cows and hunts deer. He speaks English - just not Rhode Island English! LOL!

I really gotta get that boy down South where people talk right (said with a twang).

As we drove in the car recently Will announced, "I need to get my money and go shopping for Ben a birthday present."

To which Ben responded, "I fink dats a gwood idea! I wike pwesants."

Quote of the Day, 1.2.07

Will is four-and-a-half years old. He has entered a new stage of imaginative play and has started making up his own songs. This provides us with no end of amusement! Tonight at supper we laughed at this little ditty.

"There's no way I'm smarter than a dog." Repeat ad nauseum.

I think what he meant was there's no way a dog is smarter than me but who wants to nit-pick about details? = )

*******************
Also, Ellie, who's 16 months old, is hitting a big verbal skills development stage. Don't get me wrong. She's a girl so she always been verbal. She's just starting to use her verbal skills to mimic the English language enough so that I can understand her words. Not that I've ever had difficulty understanding what she wants!

She currently says:
buh - brother
bye
sop - stop (said emphatically to one of the buhs)
coo - cookie (the girl has got a sweet tooth!)
miw - milk
da - Daddy
ma - Mama (this has many variations depending on how insistent she is)
daw - down (generally when she wants to go downstairs where the boys are playing)
bw - bow (for her hair)

Once she really starts talking I'm going to need earplugs during the day. Between Ellie and William silence will soon be a valuable commodity around here.

Do missionaries drive monster mashing trucks?

William is four-and-a-half years old. That means there are days when I wish I could duct tape him to a wall for a few hours. Or at the least duct tape him in his chair during a meal. And don't even get me started on the non-stop chatter coming from his mouth!

But then there are moments when I could just eat him up with a spoon. You know what I mean. When he says or does something so sweet I just melt inside and remember the rewards that come with my job. Like when he spontaneously gives Ellie a big hug around the neck and a kiss on the check and says, "Ellie, I love you." Or like Sunday night when I thought he was going to tell me the trick he was planning to play on me. He leaned over and whispered into my ear. But instead of some elaborate plan he said, "I love you." How sweet is that?! (And a little bit ornery.)

And then there was tonight. After reading about the Uzbek people and a missionary couple who works with them, Joel asked Will if he wanted to pray. This is what came out of his mouth. "God, thank you for sending Jesus to earth to die on the Cross and live again. Help the people who don't know you believe. In Jesus name. Amen."

He's also told me several times that we need to go tell the people overseas about Jesus. He's stated that when he's a grown-up he'll go tell them. Could I be training a certain retiring missionary's replacement?

Lest you think more highly of my preschooler than you ought, he also tells me he's going to be an astronaut, a race car driver (Thank you, Lightening McQueen), and a monster mashing truck driver (we have a DVD).

They need to hear about Jesus, too!

Father-Son Talks

Topic for discussion? Joel's mustache. Aren't they cute?

2 words you don't want to hear.

Occasionally Joel puts on his swimsuit and gives all 3 children a shower together. Tonight was one of those nights. Grubby doesn't begin to describe them. And they didn't even play outside today.

Everyone had been scrubbed and they were just playing in the water when I heared Ben say, "I poop-ted." Very matter-of-fact about it. Needless to say shower time was over.

I'm just glad it was a shower. I've been-there-done-that with a bath and it ain't fun!
